If you’re really familiar with your car’s owner’s manual, you might have already seen a chart that lets you know when to do things like checking your car’s transmission fluid. But Lakelands Tire & Auto wants you to know some other times you should really get your car’s transmission fluid checked.
Your Transmission Doesn’t Feel Right
You might not know a lot about your car’s transmission or even about transmission fluid, but you can probably recognize when your transmission doesn’t feel right. You might describe it as hesitation or rough shifting, and you might hear the engine rev before the transmission catches. Regardless, you may just have that feeling that something isn’t quite right, and that means it’s time to get the transmission inspected.
Your Transmission Is Louder than Usual
When your transmission is working properly, you shouldn’t hear too much noise out of it. The transmission is in the back of the car, so if you do start hearing transmission noises, they’ll sound like they’re behind you. Some of the noises you might hear could include grinding noises or whining noises. If you’re hearing anything that doesn’t sound right, it’s always a good idea to have someone check it out.
You’ve Spotted a Transmission Fluid Leak
You might second guess yourself a good bit with those other signs you need to look more closely at the transmission, but a leak is a pretty solid sign. Your transmission should be sealed fairly well, so if you’re seeing fluid under the rear end of the car, that’s a clue that there’s something going on. There may be damage to the transmission or a seal that’s giving way, and the problem needs to be corrected.
Your Check Engine Light Is On
What does your check engine light have to do with your transmission? More than you might expect. The transmission’s job is to transfer power created by your car’s engine to the wheels, propelling your car along the road. If the transmission is failing in some way, that’s going to pose a problem for your car’s engine at some point, so your car lets you know that there’s an issue by lighting up that check engine light.
