What Do You Know about Keeping Your Car’s Tires as Safe as Possible?

Are you keeping up with tire safety on your car? Lakelands Tire & Auto has advice for you about what you can do, why tire safety is so important, and how tire safety helps in other ways.

Proper Tire Inflation Is Crucial

You can get information about the proper tire inflation numbers for your car from your car’s owner’s manual. There’s also a sticker on the inside edge of the driver’s side door, though, that has the information you need. Tire pressure changes more often than most car owners realize, so it’s very important to keep up with it yourself. Under-inflated tires are more likely to fail and that’s something that you can absolutely avoid.

The TPMS Isn’t Enough

Now that TPMS is standard in most cars, it’s led a great many car owners to believe that they don’t have to check tire pressure manually. But that’s not true at all. TPMS systems can fail, for starters, and that’s a big problem. If that’s all you’re relying on to let you know that there’s a problem with your tire pressure, you may never realize it until the tire is flat. Second of all, TPMS notifications only let you know once you’ve already lost over 10 percent of the air in the tire.

Tread Wear Is Important, Too

How your tire tread wears affects tire safety, too. If the tread is wearing down faster than you expect, that can lead to problems when you’re expecting traction. And uneven tread wear is a bigger problem. That’s a sign that there is likely something going on elsewhere, like in the suspension or with the wheels, that needs to be addressed.

Don’t Skip Wheel Services

Wheel services aren’t the most glamorous services to have done on your car, but they’re crucial. Services like wheel alignments, wheel balancing, and tire rotations all protect the life of your car’s tires. They also help to protect the suspension and the car’s engine, which is a pretty big job, too.
